 Alban Badgbin

The Physiotherapy Assistant and Orthotics Training School at Duayaw-Nkwanta in the Brong Ahafo Region has held its maiden graduation for 32 students, made up of 19 women and 13 men.

In addition, the fourth matriculation ushering 60 fresh students made up of 28 women and 32 men was held.

Mr Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Minister of Health announced that the Ministry was instituting some measures to improve teaching and learning in health training institutions.

These include the training of more tutors, expansion of health training institutions, the provision of Information Communication Technology-led teaching and learning, and introduction of E-Learning from next year.

He commended the Catholic Church for its immense contribution towards the country's socio-economic development, and producing disciplined health workers to serve the nation.

He urged the graduates to let their chosen career remain with them as a vocation and not a job.

Mr Bagbin, asked the matriculants to attach the highest level of seriousness to their studies and learning to excel in the profession to enable them deliver quality service after completion of their training.

He noted that some health workers were gradually losing that cherished image of being loving, caring, and compassionate, adding, instead of the positive side of nursing some of them are rude and sometimes heartless.

Madam Margaret Acquaah, Principal of the School, said the academic entity was the first of its kind in Anglophone West Africa and before its establishment in 2009, Saint John of God Hospital at Duayaw-Nkwanta was already noted for its specialization in Orthopedics, Prosthetics, Orthotics, Physiotherapy and other specialized areas.

She said the school's enrollment increased from 35 in the initial stages to 120 and so far had trained 84 students.

On challenges at school, Madam Acquaah mentioned lack of accommodation, classroom facilities, teaching materials, inadequate permanent lecturers, permanent library, well-equipped kitchen, Orthotic, Electrotherapy and Exercise laboratories.

Most Reverend Peter Atuahene, Catholic Bishop of Goaso expressed concern about the high incidence of physical and functional disabilities in the country depriving people from living socially active and productive lives.

He noted that the school would go a long way to satisfy the growing need for Physiotherapy and Orthotics Assistants Ghana and the West African Sub-Region as a whole.

Physical Therapy or Physiotherapy as a health care profession is primarily concerned with the care of impairments, disabilities, promotion of mobility achieved through examination, evaluation, diagnosis and physical interventions carried out by Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants.

The school had 100 per cent record in its first examination during the 2011/2012 academic year organized by the Allied Health Secretariat.
